'A flawless, spotless experience'
Do you want to stay somewhere a little different? Did you ever think you'd end up in the poorhouse? Well now you can, although it's not so much of a 'poor' house these days...
Until recently a four-star bed and breakfast, The Auld Poor House (originally called Laggan Cottage) was built in 1880 by Kingussie Parochial Board to house the paupers of the surrounding area. It was also used to feed itinerant workers. Although now converted into a self-catering holiday home, it still retains much of its historical character. There are seven lean-to shed at the back of the house where visiting families stored their belongings but which have more recently been used for general storage for such things as wood, coal and skis.
It was only in the mid 1950s, some years after the National Assistance Act of 1948, that it was sold and used as a large private family home. In the early 1990s the main part of the building was converted into Bed and breakfast accommodation. It was then that the new owners renamed it 'The Auld Poor House'.
In 1999 it was bought by Paulene and Gordon who, until November 2007 operated a successful four-star bed and breakfast. We made extensive improvements to the property including a complete renovation of the front cottage which is attached to the main house. This is know by the whole building's former name of 'Laggan Cottage' and comprises of separate, accessible self-catering accommodation sleeping up to six people.
